Must-Visit Kyoto Temples & Shrines
Kyoto has over 2,000 temples and shrines. These are the ones I keep returning to—plus when to go to keep the magic.
Top 5 Must-See
1. Fushimi Inari Taisha
10,000 torii gates up a mountain. Go at sunrise (arrive 6-7am) for empty tunnels; it’s a different world.2. Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
Gold-covered pavilion reflecting in a pond. Iconic. Arrive at opening to avoid tour buses; loop is one-way and quick.3. Kiyomizu-dera
Wooden stage with city views. Best at golden hour; pair with Ninenzaka/Sannenzaka stroll after.4. Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)
Not silver, but serene moss gardens and raked sand. Early morning or late afternoon is calmest.5. Ryoan-ji
Famous rock garden. I sit 10-15 minutes to let the scene settle. Combine with Kinkaku-ji nearby.Hidden Gems
- Shoren-in: Quiet garden, blue light night illuminations in spring/autumn.
- Otagi Nenbutsu-ji: 1,200 quirky statues; go midday when crowds are elsewhere.
- Tofuku-ji: Autumn leaves paradise; visit at opening on weekdays.
- Shinnyodo: Underrated autumn spot; peaceful outside peak hours.
Temple Etiquette
- Bow at entrance; walk on the sides, not center.
- No photos of people praying; keep voices low.
- Remove hats/sunglasses at main halls; follow arrows (many are one-way).
