How to Buy & Use

1

Purchase Online Before Your Trip

Buy from official JR vendors or authorized resellers. You'll receive an exchange voucher.

2

Exchange at JR Office in Japan

At major stations (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Kyoto, etc.), exchange your voucher for the actual pass.

3

Choose Your Start Date

You pick when the pass activates. It doesn't have to be the exchange day.

4

Use the Manned Gates

Show your pass to station staff at the manned ticket gates. No IC card gates for JR Pass.

5

Reserve Seats When Needed

For popular routes (especially Nozomi alternatives), reserve seats at JR ticket offices.

Pro Tips

No Nozomi or Mizuho

JR Pass doesn't cover the fastest Shinkansen. Use Hikari or Sakura instead (only 10-20 min slower).

Seat Reservations Are Free

For covered trains, seat reservations cost nothing extra. Do it for peace of mind on busy routes.
